Job Summary:

A Legal Officer provides legal advice and ensures compliance with laws and regulations for the organization. This role involves drafting legal documents, representing the organization in legal matters and collaborating with various departments to manage risks, resolve disputes and protect the organization’s interests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Advisory: Provide accurate and timely legal advice to management and other departments on various legal matters. Interpret laws, regulations, and policies to guide decision-making and ensure compliance. Advise on legal risks and recommend risk mitigation strategies.
  • Contract Drafting and Review: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements and other legal documents. Ensure that all agreements align with the organization’s goals and are legally sound. Monitor contractual obligations and provide guidance on compliance.
  • Compliance Management: Ensure the organization adheres to local, national and international laws and regulations. Develop and implement compliance policies and procedures. Conduct periodic audits to assess and enforce compliance.
  • Dispute Resolution: Represent the organization in legal disputes, mediations, and arbitrations. Work with external legal counsel when necessary to resolve litigation cases. Handle employee grievances, contract disputes, or regulatory issues.
  •  Risk Management: Identify potential legal risks and recommend preventive measures. Maintain a database of legal precedents and case studies to guide future actions. Provide training to staff on legal and regulatory issues affecting their roles.
  • Regulatory Liaison: Liaise with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and external stakeholders. Represent the organization during inspections, hearings, or investigations. Ensure timely submission of required reports or documentation to authorities.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of legal documents, contracts, and case files. Prepare reports and updates for management on ongoing legal matters. Develop templates and standard operating procedures for legal documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B) and a professional certification (e.g., BL, admission to the bar).
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of legal experience in corporate, commercial, or regulatory law.
  • Familiarity with local, national, and international legal frameworks.
  • Experience in contract negotiation, dispute resolution, and compliance management.
